Q1. Describe the entire process of circulation and redistribution of water by the atmosphere and the earth along with a neat sketch.

The process of circulation and redistribution of water by the atmosphere and the Earth is known as the hydrological cycle or water cycle. It involves several stages and processes, including evaporation, condensation, precipitation, runoff, infiltration, and transpiration. Here's a detailed explanation along with a simple sketch:

Evaporation: The cycle begins with the evaporation of water from oceans, lakes, rivers, and other water bodies due to the heat from the sun. Energy from the sun causes water molecules at the surface to turn into water vapor and enter the atmosphere.

Transpiration: Transpiration is the process by which plants absorb water through their roots and release it into the atmosphere through their leaves. This contributes to the moisture content in the air.

Condensation: As water vapor rises in the atmosphere, it cools down at higher altitudes. When the air becomes saturated with moisture, it undergoes condensation, forming clouds. This process is facilitated by condensation nuclei, such as dust particles or aerosols, which provide surfaces for water vapor to condense onto.

Precipitation: Condensed water droplets in clouds continue to grow until they become heavy enough to fall back to the Earth's surface as precipitation. This can occur in various forms, including rain, snow, sleet, or hail, depending on atmospheric conditions.

Runoff: Precipitation that falls onto the Earth's surface may flow over the land as runoff, moving downhill due to gravity. Runoff collects in rivers, streams, and eventually flows into larger bodies of water such as lakes and oceans.

Infiltration: Some of the precipitation seeps into the ground through a process called infiltration. This water percolates through the soil and fills underground aquifers, which store groundwater.

Groundwater Flow: Groundwater slowly moves underground, following the slope of the water table, and may eventually discharge into surface water bodies or be drawn up by plants through their roots.

Surface Evaporation: Water from surface bodies such as lakes, rivers, and oceans may also evaporate directly back into the atmosphere, completing the cycle.

This sketch represents the various stages and processes involved in the hydrological cycle, illustrating how water moves between the atmosphere, land, and water bodies.

Q2. Explain the Rational method of peak runoff estimation. Write its assumptions.

Q3. Define infiltration. Describe the procedure of its measurements. Enlist different factors affecting infiltration.

Q4. Describe the channel types and their characteristics with suitable examples. What is seepage losses? Explain the factors affecting the seepage losses.

Q5. Discuss the advantages of recording type rain gauge over non-recording type rain gauge. Explain the Thiessen polygons method of mean rainfall measurement. Describe their limitations also.
