Define the Codex and its functions. Describe standards setting process followed by the Codex.

Definition of codex:- The Latin term Codex Alimentarius, which means "food code," is a literal translation. It consists of a number of broad and detailed food safety standards that were developed with the intention of safeguarding consumer health and promoting ethical business practises in the food industry. Food must be of good quality and safe to eat before it is sold for import or export, respectively. Furthermore, food shouldn't include pathogens that could harm plants or animals in the nations where it is imported.

Define the Codex and its functions. Describe standards setting process followed by the Codex.-The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations together established the Codex Alimentarius in the 1960s (WHO). Its goal was to provide direction and support for the formulation and development of food definitions and regulations, aid in their harmonisation, and so facilitate global trade. The 166 nations that make up the Codex Alimentarius participate in the development of standards and frequently put them into practise at the national and regional levels because they house the majority of the world's population.

The Codex function is:-

1. Promotion of health of consumers

2. Fair Trade Practices in Foods – To develop international food standards, guidelines, Code of Practices eg. GHP, GMP, HACCP, labelling, use of additives, Maximum levels of contaminants, MRL of Pesticides, methods of sampling and analysis etc.

Standards setting processing in codex:-

Proposals are made by countries or group/s of countriesThe Codex Alimentarius Commission must approve any new work done by a Codex Committee to elaborate on standards. Typically at the request of a nation or group of countries, proposals for new work are made at the Committee level and then delivered to the Commission via a project document. Whether a work should be presented to a Codex committee or the Codex Commission Exec must be decided by countries or groupings of countries..

Define the Codex and its functions. Describe standards setting process followed by the Codex.-They must be persuaded that the new task is appropriate for CAC and that they are knowledgeable about the relevant criteria for assigning work. They must also adequately explain the proposed proposal and include pertinent scientific data. Before spending the time and effort on generating a project document for new work, they must present the plan to the relevant Committee to determine the Committee's support. If any of its members object to the request for new work, the Committee shall gather information on the problems and concerns highlighted.

A. When recommending new work

If a nation or group of nations are thinking of pushing a new standard or a revision to an existing one, there are a number of factors that need to be decided. They have to

1. Verify that the appropriate Committee is being assigned the proposed work.

2. Determine whether the standard under consideration is more suitable for usage at a regional level or if it is applicable globally.

3. Compare the planned work against the pertinent standards for allocating task priority.

4. Confirm that the planned work is consistent with the priorities listed in the Commission's Strategic Plan of Work.

5. Find out if the Commission is currently working on any specific relevant strategic projects.

6. Check to see if the Commission is presently engaged in any particular pertinent strategic projects.

7. Determine the availability and need for scientific guidance.

B. Criteria for the establishment of work priorities

Define the Codex and its functions. Describe standards setting process followed by the Codex.-The criteria for determining work priorities must be taken into account when considering requests for new standards by Codex.
