1. Explain the following terms in brief: (5)

a) Food budgeting

Your food budget is what you aim to spend on food groceries every week. It usually includes any items you need to buy regularly, like meat, fruit and vegetables, bread, dairy and eggs. Pantry staples like oil, flour or spices aren’t typically included because they only need to be bought every so often. Of course, a food budget doesn’t have to be weekly. Some people prefer to budget monthly — it’s just a matter of personal preference. Food budgets are important in many households. You’d be surprised how much money wasted on food you don’t really need. Anyone trying to save money can use a food budget to meet their savings goals.

If you are new to budgeting it can be difficult to figure out how much to plan on spending on food. Unlike other items in our budget, the grocery budget can fluctuate greatly from month to month. It is easy to over spend the budget in one shopping trip. Budgeting for food, both at the grocery store and eating out takes careful planning, but it can be done. A general rule of thumb is: $75-100 monthly per person starting at $300. So a couple would spend $300 (not $200) per month. A family of 6 would spend $700 per month. This can be adjusted according to where you live and income level.

There are many tips for saving money at the grocery store, but the most important tip is to take some time to do some careful planning before that trip to the grocery store.

1. Prepare a food budget for your family for a period of 2 months. (10)

2. Visit a fair price shop functioning under Public distribution system in or around your locality/area. Tabulate the food commodities and the cost of these commodities being sold at the fair price shop. Also identify the beneficiaries. (10)

3. Prepare a 5 day cycle menu for a mid-day meal programme. Justify inclusion of nutrients in the nutritious meal. (10)

4. Conduct a market survey. Identify five different packaged food products. Record your observation related to the nutrition label on each packet. Illustrate any one food label.
