a. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is a psychological theory proposed by Abraham Maslow in his 1943 paper "A Theory of Human Motivation." It suggests that human needs can be arranged in a hierarchical order, with more basic physiological needs at the bottom and higher-level psychological needs at the top. According to Maslow, individuals must satisfy lower-level needs before progressing to higher-level needs. The hierarchy is often depicted as a pyramid with five levels:

Safety Needs: Once physiological needs are met, individuals seek safety and security, including physical safety, financial security, health, and stability in their environment.

Love and Belongingness Needs: After achieving safety, people desire social connections, love, affection, friendship, and a sense of belonging within family, friendships, and communities.

Esteem Needs: Once social needs are met, individuals seek self-esteem and the esteem of others. This includes feelings of accomplishment, recognition, respect, and prestige.

Self-Actualization Needs: At the top of the hierarchy is self-actualization, representing the fulfillment of one's potential and the desire to become the best version of oneself. This includes personal growth, creativity, problem-solving, and achieving one's aspirations.

Maslow believed that individuals are motivated to move up the hierarchy, with each level serving as a stepping stone to higher levels of personal fulfillment and psychological health. However, not all individuals reach the self-actualization stage, as the pursuit of higher-level needs may be inhibited by factors such as social, economic, or psychological barriers. Additionally, Maslow later added a sixth level to his hierarchy, called "Self-Transcendence," which involves connecting to something beyond oneself, such as spirituality or altruism.
