Q.1 Explain the terms absorptivity, reflectivity and transmissivity of radiant energy. How are they related to each other for a black body and an opaque body?

Absorptivity, reflectivity, and transmissivity are terms used to describe how materials interact with radiant energy, such as light or electromagnetic radiation. These terms are particularly important in understanding the behavior of materials in relation to heat transfer and optics.

Absorptivity (α): This refers to the ability of a material to absorb radiant energy. It is the fraction of incident radiation that is absorbed by the material. Absorptivity values range from 0 to 1, where 0 indicates that all incident radiation is reflected or transmitted, and 1 indicates that all incident radiation is absorbed.

Reflectivity (ρ): Reflectivity is the fraction of incident radiation that is reflected by a material. It represents the proportion of incident radiation that is not absorbed or transmitted but instead bounces off the surface of the material. Reflectivity also ranges from 0 to 1, where 0 means all incident radiation is absorbed, and 1 means all incident radiation is reflected.

Transmissivity (τ): Transmissivity refers to the fraction of incident radiation that passes through a material without being absorbed. It is relevant in the context of materials that are transparent or translucent. Transmissivity values also range from 0 to 1, where 0 means all incident radiation is absorbed or reflected, and 1 means all incident radiation passes through the material without being absorbed or reflected.

A black body is an idealized object that absorbs all incident radiation, regardless of wavelength or angle of incidence. Therefore, its absorptivity (α) is 1, and its reflectivity (ρ) and transmissivity (τ) are both 0. A black body absorbs all radiation that falls on it and does not reflect or transmit any.

An opaque body is one that does not transmit any light through it. Therefore, its transmissivity (τ) is 0. However, an opaque body may reflect and absorb radiation. The sum of its reflectivity (ρ) and absorptivity (α) would be 1, meaning that whatever radiation is not reflected is absorbed. So, for an opaque body, ρ + α = 1.

In summary, absorptivity, reflectivity, and transmissivity provide a comprehensive description of how materials interact with radiant energy, and they are interrelated such that for any given material, the sum of absorptivity, reflectivity, and transmissivity equals 1. However, the specific values of these properties vary depending on the material and the characteristics of the incident radiation.

GUIDELINES FOR IGNOU Assignment MRW 005023-24

MRW 005 Solved Assignment 2024-25 You will find it useful to keep the following points in mind:

1. Planning: Read the questions carefully. Go through the units on which they are based. Make some points regarding each question and then rearrange these in a STATISTICS IN PSYCHOLOGYal order. And please write the answers in your own words. Do not reproduce passages from the units.

2. Organisation: Be a little more selective and analytic before drawing up a rough outline of your answer. In an essay-type question, give adequate attention to your introduction and conclusion. The introduction must offer your brief interpretation of the question and how you propose to develop it. The conclusion must summarise your response to the question. In the course of your answer, you may like to make references to other texts or critics as this will add some depth to your analysis.

3. Presentation: Once you are satisfied with your answers, you can write down the final version for submission, writing each answer neatly and underlining the points you wish to emphasize.
