I) Answer any two of the following in not more than
1000 words each
1) Describe memory
hierarchy? Explain the types of memory hierarchy.
Memory
hierarchy refers to the organization of computer memory systems in a hierarchy
of storage devices with varying speeds, sizes, and costs. The goal of memory
hierarchy is to provide the fastest possible access to data for the CPU while
minimizing costs and maximizing storage capacity. The memory hierarchy
typically consists of several levels, each with different characteristics,
including speed, cost, and volatility. The main types of memory in a memory
hierarchy include:
Registers:
Registers are the smallest and fastest type of memory directly accessible by
the CPU. They are located within the CPU itself and are used to store data that
the CPU is currently processing. Registers have the fastest access time but are
very limited in size and are typically measured in bytes.
Cache Memory:
Cache memory is a small, high-speed memory located between the CPU and main
memory (RAM). Its purpose is to store copies of frequently accessed data and
instructions to speed up the CPU's access to them. Cache memory is divided into
several levels (L1, L2, L3) based on their proximity to the CPU, with L1 being
the closest and fastest, but also the smallest, and L3 being larger but slower.
L1 Cache: This
is the smallest and fastest cache, located directly on the CPU chip. It
typically has separate caches for instructions and data.
L2 Cache: This
cache is larger than L1 cache and is usually located on the CPU chip or very
close to it.
L3 Cache: L3
cache is larger than L2 cache and is shared among multiple CPU cores in a
multi-core processor. It is typically located on the CPU die or on a separate
chip.
Main Memory
(RAM): RAM (Random Access Memory) is the primary memory used for storing data
and instructions that are actively being used by the CPU. It is larger and
slower than cache memory but faster than secondary storage devices like hard
drives or SSDs. RAM is volatile, meaning its contents are lost when the power
is turned off.
Secondary
Storage: Secondary storage devices, such as hard disk drives (HDDs) and
solid-state drives (SSDs), provide non-volatile storage for data and programs.
They have much larger capacities than RAM but are slower to access. Secondary
storage is used for long-term storage of data that is not actively being used
by the CPU.
Tertiary
Storage: Tertiary storage refers to archival storage devices such as magnetic
tape or optical discs. These devices have even larger capacities than secondary
storage but are even slower to access. Tertiary storage is typically used for
long-term backup and archival purposes.
The memory
hierarchy is designed to exploit the principle of locality, which states that
programs tend to access a relatively small portion of their address space
frequently. By storing frequently accessed data and instructions in the faster,
smaller levels of the hierarchy, and less frequently accessed data in larger,
slower levels, the memory hierarchy maximizes performance while minimizing
cost.

process of a computer.
