Q1. What is solar
photovoltaic technology? Discuss its underlying principle and applications.
Solar photovoltaic (PV) technology converts sunlight directly into electricity using semiconductor materials. The underlying principle of solar PV is based on the photovoltaic effect, which was first observed by French physicist Edmond Becquerel in 1839. The photovoltaic effect occurs when certain materials, known as semiconductors, absorb photons (particles of light) and release electrons, generating an electric current.
Photovoltaic
Effect: When photons from sunlight strike the surface of a solar cell, they can
knock electrons loose from the atoms within the semiconductor material. This
creates a flow of electricity, as the freed electrons are captured and directed
through an external circuit, generating an electric current.
Semiconductor
Materials: Solar cells are typically made of semiconductor materials such as
silicon, which is the most commonly used material in solar PV technology. Other
semiconductor materials like cadmium telluride (CdTe), copper indium gallium
selenide (CIGS), and amorphous silicon are also used in certain types of solar
cells.
Solar Panels: Solar cells are interconnected and encapsulated within a protective layer to form solar panels or modules. These panels can be grouped together to form larger arrays capable of generating more electricity.
Residential: Solar PV systems are commonly installed on residential rooftops to generate electricity for household use. They can offset or even eliminate electricity bills, depending on the size of the system and local solar resources.
Commercial and
Industrial: Many businesses and industries utilize solar PV systems to reduce
energy costs and carbon emissions. Large-scale solar farms can generate
significant amounts of electricity for industrial applications or for feeding
into the grid.
Remote Areas
and Off-Grid Applications: Solar PV systems are ideal for powering remote areas
where traditional electricity infrastructure is unavailable or costly to
install. They are used to provide electricity for lighting, water pumping,
telecommunications, and other needs.
Portable
Devices: Solar panels are integrated into portable devices such as calculators,
watches, and phone chargers to harness solar energy for charging batteries or
powering the devices directly.
Transportation:
Solar PV technology is being integrated into transportation applications, such
as solar-powered vehicles and solar-assisted charging stations for electric
vehicles, to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lower carbon emissions.
