Q1. Define rainfed
farming and write its characteristics. Explain the detrimentaleffects of
unfavourable weather conditions on rainfed farming.
Rainfed farming, also known as dryland farming or rainfed agriculture, refers to agricultural practices that rely solely on natural rainfall for irrigation and moisture. Unlike irrigated farming, which relies on artificial irrigation systems to supply water to crops, rainfed farming depends entirely on precipitation for water supply.
Reliance on
Rainfall: Rainfed farming depends entirely on the amount and timing of
rainfall. Farmers have little control over the water supply, making them
vulnerable to fluctuations in precipitation patterns.
Variable
Yields: Due to the unpredictable nature of rainfall, yields in rainfed farming
can vary significantly from year to year. Droughts or excessive rainfall can
lead to crop failures or reduced yields.
Soil Moisture
Management: Farmers in rainfed areas often employ soil moisture conservation
techniques such as mulching, contour plowing, and conservation tillage to
maximize water retention in the soil.
Crop Diversity:
Rainfed farming often involves the cultivation of drought-resistant crops that
can better withstand erratic rainfall patterns. Crop diversification is common
to mitigate risks associated with climatic variability.
Limited
Irrigation Infrastructure: Unlike irrigated agriculture, rainfed farming
typically lacks extensive irrigation infrastructure, making it less
capital-intensive but also more vulnerable to water scarcity.
Vulnerability
to Climate Change: Climate change is exacerbating the challenges faced by
rainfed farmers, leading to more frequent and severe droughts, floods, and
other extreme weather events.
Unfavorable
weather conditions can have detrimental effects on rainfed farming in several
ways:
Drought:
Extended periods of drought can lead to water stress in crops, reduced yields,
and even complete crop failures. Droughts also deplete soil moisture levels,
making it challenging for subsequent crops to germinate and grow.
Floods:
Excessive rainfall can cause flooding, which can damage crops, wash away
topsoil, and lead to soil erosion. Floods can also increase the risk of
waterlogging, which suffocates plant roots and reduces crop yields.
Hailstorms:
Hailstorms can severely damage crops by bruising or shredding leaves, stems,
and fruits. This can reduce yields and quality, leading to financial losses for
farmers.
Extreme
Temperatures: Extreme temperatures, such as heatwaves or frost events, can
stress crops and impair their growth and development. Heatwaves can cause
wilting, reduced photosynthesis, and even plant death, while frost events can
damage tender crops and sensitive plant tissues.
Pests and
Diseases: Unfavorable weather conditions can create favorable environments for
pests and diseases, leading to outbreaks that can devastate crops. For example,
warm and humid conditions can promote the spread of fungal diseases, while
drought-stressed plants may become more susceptible to pest attacks.
Overall,
unfavorable weather conditions pose significant challenges to rainfed farming,
highlighting the importance of climate-resilient agricultural practices and
policies to mitigate risks and support the livelihoods of rainfed farmers.
Q2. What is the
management practices for aberrant weather conditions (local and improved),
explain?
Q3. What is crop
diversification? Describe the suggested crop diversification in rainfed regions
of India.
Q4. Describe the
on-field water conservation.
Q5. Explain sprinkler
irrigation method. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of sprinkler
irrigation.
