Q1. Define soil erosion. Explain causes of soil erosion. Describe the different forms of water erosion.

Soil erosion refers to the process by which soil particles are dislodged and transported from one location to another by various natural forces such as water, wind, ice, or gravity. It's a natural process, but human activities often exacerbate it, leading to significant environmental problems such as loss of fertile topsoil, degradation of land, and water pollution.

Water: Rainfall, runoff, and flowing water from rivers, streams, or waves along coastlines can dislodge soil particles and carry them away.

Wind: Strong winds can lift and carry loose soil particles, particularly in arid or semi-arid regions with little vegetation cover.

Gravity: Gravity can cause soil to move downslope, especially on steep slopes or in areas prone to landslides.

Ice: Glaciers and ice sheets can transport large volumes of soil and rock debris as they move.

Human-Induced Causes:

Deforestation: Clearing forests for agriculture, urbanization, or logging removes the protective cover of vegetation, making soil more vulnerable to erosion by water and wind.

Overgrazing: Excessive grazing by livestock can compact soil, reduce vegetation cover, and increase soil erosion.

Agriculture: Poor agricultural practices such as improper tillage, monoculture farming, and leaving fields bare after harvesting can accelerate soil erosion.

Construction: Construction activities like excavation, grading, and land clearing disturb soil and increase its susceptibility to erosion.

Mining: Mining operations can expose large areas of soil and rock, leading to erosion and sedimentation in nearby water bodies.

Water erosion, specifically, can occur in various forms:

Sheet Erosion: This occurs when thin layers of soil are gradually removed uniformly from a land surface by the flow of water over it, leaving behind a more or less level surface.

Rill Erosion: As water flow concentrates into small channels, it forms shallow grooves called rills on the soil surface. Rill erosion typically occurs on slopes and is a precursor to more severe forms of erosion.

Gully Erosion: When rills deepen and widen over time, they form larger channels known as gullies. Gully erosion can significantly degrade landscapes and lead to the loss of productive land.

Streambank Erosion: Along rivers and streams, the force of flowing water can erode the banks, causing them to collapse and contribute sediment to the watercourse.

Coastal Erosion: Along coastlines, the action of waves, tides, and currents can wear away coastal landforms, leading to the loss of beaches, cliffs, and dunes.

Each form of water erosion can have profound environmental impacts, affecting soil fertility, water quality, and the stability of ecosystems. Preventive measures such as implementing soil conservation practices, maintaining vegetative cover, and proper land management can help mitigate soil erosion and its adverse effects.

Q2. Describe Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) for estimation of water erosion losses along with defining its various terms.

Q3. Describe the processes of wind erosion. Explain the factors affecting wind erosion.

Q4. Describe biological and agronomic measures to control soil erosion.

Q5. Define artificial groundwater recharge. Write advantages of artificial groundwater recharge. Enlist methods of artificial groundwater recharge.
