rates remain high. This leads to a rapid population growth.
Late expanding phase: Birth rates start to decrease due to
factors such as increased access to contraception, education, and economic
opportunities for women. However, the population continues to grow, albeit at a
slower pace.
Low stationary phase: In this final stage, both birth and
death rates are low, resulting in a stabilized population size.
The significance of demographic transition in sustainability
studies lies in its implications for population growth, resource consumption,
and environmental impact:
Population Growth: Demographic transition is associated with
a decline in population growth rates. This is crucial for sustainability as it
helps alleviate pressures on resources such as food, water, and energy.
Resource Consumption: With lower population growth rates,
there is a reduced strain on natural resources and ecosystems. This allows for
more sustainable resource management practices and helps mitigate environmental
degradation.
Environmental Impact: Slower population growth rates
contribute to lower carbon emissions, deforestation, habitat destruction, and
other forms of environmental damage associated with human activities. This
supports efforts to combat climate change and preserve biodiversity.
Quality of Life: As societies progress through demographic
transition, there is often an improvement in living standards, access to
