Q1. Explain the major
outcomes of Earth Summit.
The Earth Summit, officially known as the United Nations
Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), took place in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil, in June 1992. It was a landmark event in international
environmental diplomacy, bringing together heads of state, policymakers,
activists, and experts to address pressing global environmental issues. The
major outcomes of the Earth Summit include:
Adoption of Agenda 21: Agenda 21 is a comprehensive plan of
action to be taken globally, nationally, and locally by organizations of the
United Nations System, governments, and major groups in every area in which
human impacts on the environment.
Rio Declaration on Environment and Development: This
declaration outlined principles for sustainable development, emphasizing the
integration of environmental protection and socio-economic development. It emphasized
the right to development must be fulfilled so as to equitably meet
developmental and environmental needs of present and future generations.
Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD): The CBD was opened
for signature at the Earth Summit and entered into force in December 1993. It
aims to conserve biodiversity, sustainably use its components, and ensure the
fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from genetic resources.
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
(UNFCCC): The UNFCCC was also opened for signature at the Earth Summit. It
provides the framework for international cooperation to combat climate change
by stabilizing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere.
Statement of Forest Principles: This non-legally binding instrument
aims to support sustainable forest management, conservation of forests, and
enhancement of forest carbon stocks.
Establishment of the Commission on Sustainable Development
(CSD): The CSD was created to ensure effective follow-up to the Earth Summit
and to monitor and report on the implementation of the agreements reached.
Increased Awareness and Action on Environmental Issues: The
Earth Summit raised global awareness about environmental challenges and the
need for sustainable development. It catalyzed action at national and
international levels to address issues such as climate change, biodiversity
loss, deforestation, and desertification.
Overall, the Earth Summit marked a significant step forward
in international efforts to promote sustainable development and address
environmental concerns on a global scale.
