Q1. Explain the
different stages of Demographic Transition Model.
The
Demographic Transition Model (DTM) is a conceptual framework used to describe
the historical and projected population trends in societies as they undergo
economic and social development. The model typically consists of four or five
stages, each representing a different phase of population change. Here are the
stages of the DTM:
Stage 1:
High Stationary
Characterized
by high birth rates and high death rates, resulting in a stable population
size.
Population
growth is slow or nonexistent due to the balance between high birth rates (to
compensate for high mortality) and high death rates (due to limited healthcare,
sanitation, and living conditions).
Typically
associated with pre-industrial societies where agricultural practices are
prevalent and medical advancements are limited.
Stage 2:
Early Expanding
Marked by a
decline in death rates due to improvements in healthcare, sanitation, and food
supply, while birth rates remain high.
Population
growth accelerates as the gap between birth and death rates widens.
This stage
often corresponds with the onset of industrialization and urbanization, where
advances in technology lead to better living conditions and increased life
expectancy.
Stage 3:
Late Expanding
Birth rates
begin to decline, leading to a gradual decrease in population growth.
Death rates
continue to fall or stabilize, resulting in a more balanced population growth
rate.
Factors
contributing to declining birth rates may include increased access to
contraception, greater education and employment opportunities for women, and
societal shifts towards smaller family sizes.
This stage
is often associated with industrialized societies where urbanization and
modernization are well-established.
Stage 4: Low
Stationary
Both birth
and death rates are low, resulting in little to no population growth.
Population
size stabilizes or may even decline slightly due to factors such as an aging
population, low fertility rates, and societal preferences for smaller families.
This stage
is characteristic of post-industrial societies where most people live in urban
areas, education and healthcare are advanced, and family planning is widely
available and accepted.
Some models
include a fifth stage:
Stage 5:
Declining
Birth rates
fall below replacement level, leading to a decline in the population size.
Population
aging becomes a significant demographic challenge as the proportion of elderly
people increases relative to younger generations.
This stage
is often associated with countries experiencing very low fertility rates,
significant emigration, and an aging population structure.
It's
important to note that while the DTM provides a general framework for
understanding population dynamics, not all countries progress through these
stages linearly or at the same pace. Additionally, some countries may experience
unique demographic trends due to specific cultural, economic, or political
factors.
Q2. Discuss ‘the
market-globalization-environmental degradation linkages’ with suitable
examples.
Q3. Define the term
Fragile Ecosystem. Explain the livelihood system in any one of the fragile ecosystem
in your country.
Q4. Explain the concept
of Total Economic Values of Ecosystem Services.
