Food safety standard are:-The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare of the Government of India created the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) as a statutory body.The Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which is a consolidated statute relating to food safety and regulation in India, is the legal basis on which the FSSAI was formed.

A regulation or standard is authorised by the Food Authority after suggestion by the Scientific Panel and after adhering to the prescribed procedures, including validation by the Scientific Committee. A final notification is sent out for implementation after collecting stakeholder feedback and concerns.
  • Regulation for Food Safety and Guidelines (Packaging), 2018:-The Regulations specify specific requirements/restrictions in their respect and also provide a comprehensive list of packaging materials that may be used for the packaging of particular categories of food products.
  • Food Safety and Standards (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2018:-According to this regulation, each manufacturer and packer of fortified food must make a commitment to quality assurance and provide the Food Authority or another authority that the Food Authority may designate with proof of the actions they have done. Additionally, all fortified foods—whether they are added willingly or as a result of mandatory fortification—must be produced, packaged, labelled, handled, distributed, and sold in accordance with the regulations and laws established by the Act.
  • Food Safety and Standards (Food or Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Foods for Special Dietary Uses, Foods for Special Medical Purpose, Functional Foods and Novel Food) Regulations, 2016:-Hard, soft, or vegetarian food offered in capsule form must adhere to the general monograph and quality standards outlined by the Indian Pharmacopoeia. Additionally, the amount of ingredients added to food articles must not surpass the RDA, which is determined by the ICMR and Codex Alimentarius Commission. And if the food product falls under the category of health supplements, the individual nutrient content must be at least 15% of the RDA, and if a greater nutrient content claim is made, the nutrient must be at least 30% of the RDA.
  • Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on sales) Regulation, 2011:-The rule forbids the sale of certain additives. For instance, milk with any added water, a blend of two or more edible oils as an edible oil, turmeric containing any foreign substance, etc.; limitations on the use of certain ingredients, such as Kesari gramme and its products; prohibition and limitations on the sale of certain products; and limitations relating to conditions for sale, such as food articles coated with mineral oil, food that resembles honey but is not pure honey, tobacco and nicotine used as ingredients in any fad diet product, etc.
  • Food Safety and Standards (Recognition and Notification of Laboratories) Regulation, 2018:-The food laboratory or referral food laboratory may be accepted by the Food Authority as a reference laboratory for the purposes of creating test procedures, validating findings, determining levels of proficiency, and providing training.

  • Every person running a food company must make sure that the packaging they use complies with the following laws: When applicable International Standards are not accessible, Indian Standards may be followed.
  •  Packaging materials must be suitable for the type of product, the storage conditions offered, the equipment for filling, sealing, and packaging food, as well as transportation conditions.
  •  Packaging materials must be able to withstand mechanical stress. An overwrap packaging is appropriate for flexible or semi-rigid packages.

  •  The materials used for packaging must be able to resist mechanical, chemical, or thermal stresses that may be present during routine transportation. It might be essential to overwrap containers that are flexible or semi-rigid.
  • The packaging for food products must be sterile, hygienic, and tamper-proof. The sealing substance must be compatible with the product, the containers, and the closure methods being used for the containers.

  • Tin vessels should never be used again to package food.
  • Reusable glass bottles and plastic containers with a volume of at least five litres each must be used for food packaging.
  • Reusable glass bottles and plastic containers with a volume of five litres or more for food packaging must be durable and simple to clean or disinfect.
  • Food products should not come into close contact with printed surfaces on packaging materials.
  •  Food storage and packaging must not use newspaper or any similar substance.
  • Every person who operates a food business must acquire a certificate of conformity from a NABL accredited laboratory in order to use packaging that will come into direct contact with food or layers that are likely to do so.
