IGNOU DCE-06 Guided Project Work for 2025–26 (100% Approval)

The Diploma in Creative Writing in English (DCE) offered by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is one of the most popular programmes for aspiring writers. It is designed to help learners acquire creative writing skills in different genres such as poetry, short stories, novels, features, and scripts. Among all the courses in the programme, DCE-06: Guided Project Work holds a unique place. IGNOU DCE-06 Guided Project Work for 2025–26 (100% Approval)

DCE-06 is not just another theoretical paper; it is a practical component where students are required to apply the knowledge, techniques, and skills they have learned in earlier courses (DCE-1 to DCE-5). The course allows learners to actually produce a substantial body of creative writing under guidance and evaluation.

2. Structure of the Project

DCE-06 has two main components:

1.    Project Proposal (Synopsis)

o   Length: Around 500 words

o   Purpose: To explain what you plan to write and how you will approach it.

o   Approval: Must be approved by IGNOU before you begin full work.

2.    Project Report (Main Creative Writing Piece)

o   Length: Usually 10,000–15,000 words (varies by form).

o   Content: The actual novella, collection of poems, short stories, articles, or script.

o   Submission: Along with a copy of your approved proposal.

Both these components are compulsory. You cannot submit the final report without having your proposal approved first.

3. Guidelines for the Project Proposal (Synopsis)

The Project Proposal is your first step. It is like a “blueprint” of what you intend to create. IGNOU requires every student to submit it for approval to ensure:

  • The topic/idea is suitable.
  • The form is within approved categories.
  • The workload matches credit requirements.
  • There is originality and creative intent.

a) Content of the Proposal

A strong proposal should include:

1.    Title of the Work – Short, meaningful, and creative.

2.    Form of Writing Chosen – e.g., novella, 10 short stories, 12 poems, 8 articles, or a TV/radio script.

3.    Rationale / Need for the Work – Why are you writing this piece? What inspired it? What relevance does it have?

4.    Objectives – What do you want to achieve as a writer? (e.g., explore themes of identity, depict rural life, experiment with form).

5.    Outline / Plan – A brief sketch of what you will cover. For example:

o   For a novella: chapter-wise outline.

o   For short stories: titles or themes of stories.

o   For poems: central themes.

o   For features: list of topics.

6.    Method / Approach – Style, narrative technique, tone, language choice.

7.    Preliminary Bibliography (if relevant) – List any references or reading materials that inspire you.

b) Length

The proposal should be around 500 words – not too short, not too long. It should give a clear picture of your plan but without going into full detail.

c) Where to Submit

  • Address the proposal to:
The Director, School of Humanities, IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi – 110068
  • Send a copy to your Regional Director.

d) Deadlines

  • January session: Submit proposal by 30th June.
  • July session: Submit proposal by 31st December.

e) Approval Process

The School of Humanities will evaluate your proposal. You may receive one of three responses:

  • Approved – You can begin writing.
  • Conditionally Approved – Make small changes and resubmit.
  • Rejected / Re-do – Revise completely and submit again.

👉 Always keep a copy of the approved proposal. It must be attached when you submit the final report.

6. Evaluation and Marks

  • The project is evaluated by examiners appointed by IGNOU.
  • Marks are awarded based on:
    • Originality and creativity.
    • Language and style.
    • Structure and coherence.
    • Relevance to proposal.
    • Presentation and adherence to guidelines.

The project carries 100 marks, equivalent to other courses, and contributes to your overall grade.

7. Tips for Approval

1.    Start early – Proposal approval may take time, so don’t delay.

2.    Pick a topic you are passionate about – Writing 10,000+ words is easier if you love the theme.

3.    Be realistic – Don’t choose a huge epic; select a manageable scope.

4.    Revise and edit – IGNOU values clarity and polish. Avoid careless errors.

5.    Stay original – Do not copy from published works; plagiarism can disqualify you.

6.    Follow the format – Include cover page, certificate, TOC, etc.

7.    Keep backup copies – Save digital and printed versions safely.

8.    Meet deadlines – Submit before May 30/Nov 30 to avoid missing exams.

8. Conclusion

The DCE-06 Guided Project Work is not just an academic requirement – it is a golden opportunity to showcase your creativity and build a portfolio of writing. By carefully selecting a topic, preparing a clear proposal, and developing a well-crafted final project, you can not only score good grades but also create work that may later be published.

For 2025–26 learners, the key is to balance creativity with structure. Stick to IGNOU’s word limits, formats, and deadlines, but within that framework, let your imagination flow freely. Whether you write a novella, a poetry collection, or a set of stories, remember – this is your chance to take the first step as a serious writer.
