Question Papers A survey of MEG-01
question papers (June 2011–Dec 2024) shows recurring poets and topics. For
example, Chaucer appears frequently – e.g. June 2011 asked about Chaucer’s
sources of vocabulary , Dec 2011 about Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales Prologue

background .
Dryden’s mock-heroic Mac Flecknoe
is common (Dec 2011, June 2021) .
Blake is another constant:
questions on “what is the function of poetry” , on mysticism in Blake’s work ,

(Kubla Khan allegory and influence) .
In the modern era, W.B. Yeats questions (e.g. on “Easter 1916”, Adam’s Curse, Lapis Lazuli) appear many times .
Other repeated poets include Rossetti (e.g. Blessed Damozel, My Sister’s Sleep) , Browning (Browning’s passion – Santayana quote)
T.S. Eliot

By Theme
Romanticism/Nature: Romantic poets
(Wordsworth, Coleridge, Blake, Shelley, Keats) are tested via key works or
concepts. For example, questions on mysticism and nature in Blake’s poetry , on
Coleridge’s Kubla Khan and his contribution , or on the pastoral/mystic
elements of Wordsworth’s Prelude often appear. Romantic themes like imagination
vs. reason are also covered (e.g. Johnson’s definition of poetry ).
Satire/Criticism: Satirical works
are frequent. Dryden’s mock-heroic Mac Flecknoe appears in many papers . Pope’s
satire (e.g. Epistle to Arbuthnot) is asked (June 2023), and questions on
Neoclassical criticism (Johnson’s view on poetry ) recur.
Modernism & Symbolism:
20th-century poetry is prominent. Yeats’s historical and symbolic themes
(Easter 1916, Sailing to Byzantium, Adam’s Curse) are commonly examined .
T.S. Eliot’s use of myth and modern imagery is tested (e.g. Waste Land, Journey
of the Magi). Philip Larkin’s modern-life focus is highlighted (e.g. being
“uncommon poet for the common man” ).
Nature & Religion: Themes of
nature and spirituality recur. For example, Milton’s religious context (Puritanism)
, the intersection of poetry and faith (Blake), and Romantic nature imagery.
Questions often ask about mysticism in Blake or symbolism in Yeats, reflecting
a focus on metaphysical themes. IGNOU MEG 01 Previous Question Papers with Answers PDF
