Assignment One
Answer the following questions in about 500 words each.
Each question carries 20 marks.
Q1. Explain the concept
of person perception. Discuss then theories and biases related to attribution.
Person
perception is the process through which individuals form impressions,
judgments, and evaluations of other people. It involves interpreting and
understanding the behavior, traits, and characteristics of others, often based
on limited information. This process is fundamental to human social interaction
and plays a crucial role in how we navigate our relationships and the world
around us.
Theories and
biases related to attribution are frameworks that attempt to explain how
individuals interpret and make sense of the behavior of others. Here are some
key theories and biases:
Attribution
Theory: Developed by Fritz Heider in the 1950s, attribution theory proposes
that individuals make inferences about the causes of others' behavior. It
suggests that people attribute behavior to either internal factors (such as
personality traits or disposition) or external factors (such as situational
factors or environmental influences). For example, if someone fails a test, we
might attribute their failure to either their lack of intelligence (internal
attribution) or the difficulty of the test (external attribution).
Fundamental
Attribution Error (FAE): This bias refers to the tendency for individuals to
overemphasize internal factors and underestimate external factors when
explaining the behavior of others. In other words, people tend to attribute
others' behavior more to their personality traits or disposition than to
situational factors. For instance, if someone cuts you off in traffic, you
might assume they're a rude person rather than considering the possibility that
they might be rushing to an emergency.
Actor-Observer
Bias: This bias suggests that when explaining our own behavior, we tend to
attribute it to external factors (such as situational influences), while when
explaining others' behavior, we tend to attribute it to internal factors (such
as personality traits). For example, if we perform poorly on a task, we might
blame it on external factors like being tired or distracted. However, if
someone else performs poorly on the same task, we might attribute it to their
lack of ability or effort.
Self-Serving
Bias: This bias refers to the tendency for individuals to attribute their
successes to internal factors (such as ability or effort) but their failures to
external factors (such as bad luck or situational factors). This bias helps to
protect self-esteem and maintain a positive self-image. For example, if someone
does well on a job interview, they might attribute it to their own skills and
preparation. However, if they don't get the job, they might blame it on the
unfairness of the selection process.
Cultural
Differences in Attribution: Attribution patterns can vary across cultures.
Individualistic cultures tend to emphasize internal attributions, focusing on
personal characteristics and individual achievements. In contrast,
collectivistic cultures often prioritize external attributions, considering the
influence of social norms, roles, and relationships on behavior.
Understanding
these theories and biases can help individuals become more aware of their own
thought processes and judgments when perceiving others, leading to more
accurate and empathetic interactions.
Q2. Discuss the concept
of self and social behavior across cultures.
Assignment Two
Answer the following questions in about 100 words each.
Each question carries 5 marks.
Q3. Discuss the agents
of enculturation.
Q4. Describe the
sources of errors in social cognition.
Q5. Discuss factors
affecting persuasion.
Q6. Describe the ways
of reducing aggression.
Q7. Explain the
motivation behind pro-social behaviour.
Q8. Elaborate the
causes and resolution strategies of conflict.
