Q.1. Discuss symptoms
of major diseases of Apple and also describe their control.
Several major diseases can affect apple trees, leading to
significant reductions in fruit quality and yield if left unchecked. Here are
some common diseases, along with their symptoms and control measures:
Apple Scab (Venturia inaequalis):
Symptoms: Apple scab is one of the most common and
destructive diseases affecting apple trees. It causes dark, scabby lesions on
leaves, fruit, and sometimes stems. Infected leaves may drop prematurely, and
heavily infected fruit can become distorted and cracked.
Control:
Plant resistant varieties.
Apply fungicides preventively, starting at bud break and
continuing throughout the growing season.
Prune trees to improve air circulation and reduce humidity.
Remove and destroy infected leaves and fruit to reduce
overwintering spores.
Fire Blight (Erwinia amylovora):
Symptoms: Fire blight causes wilting, blackening, and
"fire scorched" appearance of blossoms, shoots, and branches.
Infected blossoms turn brown and cling to the tree, resembling a shepherd's
crook.
Control:
Prune out infected branches at least 12 inches below visible
symptoms.
Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer, as this can promote
succulent growth more susceptible to infection.
Apply copper-based bactericides during bloom to reduce
bacterial populations.
Plant resistant varieties.
Powdery Mildew (Podosphaera leucotricha):
Symptoms: Powdery mildew appears as a white, powdery growth
on leaves, shoots, and fruit. Infected leaves may become distorted or puckered.
Control:
Apply fungicides preventively, especially during periods of
high humidity and mild temperatures.
Prune trees to improve air circulation.
Plant resistant varieties.
Cedar Apple Rust (Gymnosporangium juniperi-virginianae):
Symptoms: Cedar apple rust causes yellow-orange spots on
leaves and fruit, which eventually develop into raised, rust-colored lesions.
On cedar or juniper trees, gelatinous, orange structures called telial horns
may form during wet weather.
Control:
Remove nearby cedar or juniper trees, as they serve as an
alternate host for the fungus.
Apply fungicides preventively during the spring to protect
emerging leaves and fruit.
Plant resistant varieties.
Apple Maggot (Rhagoletis pomonella):
Symptoms: Apple maggot infestations cause tunneling and
feeding damage within fruit, resulting in discolored, distorted, or prematurely
dropped apples.
Control:
Apply insecticides targeting adult flies during the growing
season, timed according to local pest emergence patterns.
Use physical barriers such as sticky traps or bags to
prevent adult flies from laying eggs on fruit.
Remove and destroy infested fruit promptly to reduce
overwintering populations.
Apple Scab (Phytophthora spp.):
Symptoms: Phytophthora infections cause root rot, leading to
stunted growth, wilting, and dieback of branches. Infected bark may develop
cankers, and trees may ultimately collapse.
Control:
Plant trees in well-drained soil and avoid overwatering.
Apply fungicides to protect roots and lower trunk from
infection.
Remove and destroy infected trees to prevent spread to
healthy trees.
Regular monitoring, proper cultural practices, and timely
intervention are essential components of disease management in apple orchards.
Integrated pest management (IPM) approaches that combine biological, cultural,
physical, and chemical control methods can help minimize disease incidence and
preserve tree health.
Q.2. Explain the pests
and disease management in Sapota and Jackfruit.
Q.3. Discuss the
Cultural Practices for the successful Cashew Cultivation.
Q.4. Explain the area
and production status of Date Palm in India. Write about its uses.
Q.5. Describe the
disease management in Aonla.
