The historical
perspective of disability in India is deeply intertwined with cultural, social,

individuals with disabilities has varied widely, influenced by prevailing
beliefs, values, and societal structures. Here is an overview of the historical
perspective of disability in the Indian context:
Ancient
Civilizations: In ancient India, disability was often viewed through the lens
of religious beliefs and karma. Some religious texts, such as the Vedas and the
Puranas, mention stories of individuals with disabilities, portraying them as
either cursed or blessed based on their past deeds. The concept of karma
suggested that one's present condition, including disability, was a result of
actions in past lives. As a result, people with disabilities were often
marginalized and discriminated against, although there were also instances of
compassion and inclusion.
Influence of
Hinduism: Hinduism, as the predominant religion in India, has had a significant
impact on attitudes towards disability. While some Hindu scriptures advocate
for compassion and care towards individuals with disabilities, others
perpetuate stigmatization and discrimination. The caste system further
compounded issues, as people with disabilities often found themselves relegated
to the lowest rungs of society.
Medieval Period:
During the medieval period, attitudes towards disability continued to be
influenced by religious and cultural factors. Some rulers and wealthy
individuals were known for their acts of charity towards people with
disabilities, establishing institutions and shelters for their care. However, widespread
poverty and social inequality meant that many individuals with disabilities
were left to fend for themselves, often begging on the streets.
Colonial Era:
British colonial rule in India introduced Western concepts of disability and
institutionalization. Institutions for people with disabilities were
established, but they often operated under oppressive conditions. The British
also enacted legislation, such as the Lunacy Act of 1858, which provided for
the detention of mentally ill individuals but did little to address the needs
of people with other types of disabilities.
Post-Independence:
After gaining independence in 1947, India began to address issues of disability
more systematically. The government enacted various laws and policies aimed at
protecting the rights of people with disabilities and promoting their inclusion
in society. The Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of
Rights and Full Participation) Act was passed in 1995, providing a legal
framework for addressing issues related to disability.
Contemporary
Times: In recent decades, there has been increased awareness and advocacy for
the rights of people with disabilities in India. Non-governmental organizations
(NGOs) and advocacy groups have played a significant role in pushing for
greater inclusion and accessibility. However, challenges such as stigma,
discrimination, lack of access to education and employment opportunities, and
