Q1. Explain the
different stages of Demographic Transition Model.
The Demographic
Transition Model (DTM) is a conceptual framework used to describe the
demographic changes that occur as societies progress through economic and
social development. It consists of several stages that represent shifts in
birth rates, death rates, and population growth over time. These stages are
typically categorized as follows:
Stage 1:
Pre-Industrial Society
Characterized
by high birth rates and high death rates, resulting in a stable or slow-growing
population.
Birth rates are
high due to limited contraception, a lack of family planning, and the need for
children to support families in agriculture-based economies.
Death rates are
also high due to limited medical knowledge, poor sanitation, and widespread
disease.
Stage 2:
Transitional Stage
This stage
begins with advancements in healthcare, sanitation, and food production,
leading to a significant decline in death rates.
Birth rates
remain high initially, resulting in a rapid increase in population growth.
The gap between
birth and death rates widens, leading to a population explosion.
Improved
healthcare and sanitation lead to longer life expectancy and lower infant
mortality rates.
Stage 3:
Industrializing Society
Birth rates
start to decline due to factors such as increased education, urbanization, and
access to contraception.
Death rates
continue to fall, although at a slower pace than in Stage 2.
Economic
changes, such as increased industrialization and urbanization, lead to smaller
family sizes and a shift away from agricultural economies.
Population
growth remains positive but begins to slow down compared to Stage 2.
Stage 4:
Post-Industrial Society
Birth rates and
death rates stabilize at low levels, resulting in a low and stable population
growth rate.
Factors
contributing to low birth rates include higher levels of education, increased
employment opportunities for women, and access to family planning services.
Aging
populations become a concern as life expectancy continues to rise, leading to
challenges related to healthcare, pensions, and labor force participation.
Population
growth may even become negative in some advanced economies, leading to concerns
about population aging and its economic implications.
Stage 5
(Optional): Theoretical Decline
Some
demographers propose the existence of a fifth stage characterized by declining
population size due to persistently low birth rates.
This stage is
theoretical and not universally accepted, as it depends on various factors such
as immigration patterns, government policies, and social norms.
It's important
to note that not all countries progress through these stages in the same way or
at the same pace, and some countries may experience unique demographic patterns
due to specific historical, cultural, or political factors. However, the DTM provides
a useful framework for understanding broad trends in population dynamics
associated with economic and social development.
Q2. Discuss ‘the
market-globalization-environmental degradation linkages’ with suitable examples.
Q3. Define the term
Fragile Ecosystem. Explain the livelihood system in any one of the fragile ecosystem
in your country.
Q4. Explain the concept
of Total Economic Values of Ecosystem Services.
