Q1. Explain the concept
‘Ecosystem Function’ with suitable examples.
Ecosystem function refers to the processes and activities within an ecosystem
that contribute to its overall health, stability, and productivity. These
functions are essential for maintaining the balance of nutrients, energy flow,
and other crucial processes that sustain life within the ecosystem. Here are
some key ecosystem functions along with examples:
Nutrient
Cycling: Ecosystems recycle nutrients such as carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus
through various biological, chemical, and physical processes. For example,
decomposers like bacteria and fungi break down organic matter, releasing
nutrients back into the soil for plants to use. In aquatic ecosystems,
phytoplankton absorb carbon dioxide during photosynthesis and release oxygen,
while marine organisms recycle nutrients through the food chain.
Primary
Production: This refers to the synthesis of organic matter by autotrophic
organisms (mainly plants) through photosynthesis. Plants capture sunlight and
convert it into chemical energy, which forms the basis of the food web. For
instance, in a forest ecosystem, trees convert sunlight into biomass through
photosynthesis, providing energy and nutrients for other organisms such as
herbivores, which are then consumed by predators.
Water
Regulation: Ecosystems play a crucial role in regulating the hydrological cycle
by controlling the distribution, quantity, and quality of water. Wetlands, for
example, act as natural water filters, removing pollutants and excess nutrients
from water before it enters rivers or groundwater. Forests also regulate water
flow by absorbing and releasing water, reducing the risk of floods and
maintaining stable water levels in rivers and streams.
Climate
Regulation: Ecosystems influence climate patterns by storing and releasing
carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, regulating temperature, and
influencing precipitation patterns. Forests, particularly tropical rainforests,
act as carbon sinks, absorbing large amounts of carbon dioxide from the
atmosphere through photosynthesis. They also release water vapor through
transpiration, which contributes to cloud formation and rainfall.
Pollination
and Seed Dispersal: Many ecosystems rely on the mutualistic relationships
between plants and animals for pollination and seed dispersal. Pollinators such
as bees, butterflies, and birds facilitate the reproduction of flowering plants
by transferring pollen between flowers. Seed dispersers such as birds, mammals,
and insects help plants colonize new areas by dispersing seeds through their
feces or by carrying them to different locations.
Erosion
Control and Soil Formation: Ecosystems, particularly forests, grasslands, and
wetlands, help prevent soil erosion by stabilizing soil with roots, reducing
the impact of wind and water erosion. They also contribute to soil formation
through the accumulation of organic matter and the breakdown of rocks and
minerals by microorganisms and plant roots.
These are
just a few examples of the diverse functions that ecosystems perform. Each ecosystem
has its unique set of functions depending on its structure, composition, and
environmental conditions. Maintaining the integrity of these functions is
crucial for the sustainability of ecosystems and the well-being of human
