Q.1 Classify the
various energy resources and explain each of them.
Renewable
energy resources are derived from sources that are naturally replenished on a
human timescale. These resources are generally considered sustainable and
environmentally friendly because they produce little to no greenhouse gas
emissions during energy generation.
a. Solar
Energy: Solar energy is derived from the sun's radiation. It can be captured
using solar panels (photovoltaic cells) to convert sunlight directly into
electricity or through solar thermal systems that use sunlight to heat a fluid
to generate electricity.
b. Wind Energy:
Wind energy is harnessed by wind turbines, which convert the kinetic energy of
the wind into mechanical power. This mechanical power is then converted into
electricity through a generator.
c. Hydropower:
Hydropower utilizes the energy of flowing water, typically from rivers or dams,
to generate electricity. Water flows through turbines, causing them to rotate
and generate electricity.
d. Biomass
Energy: Biomass energy is derived from organic materials such as wood, agricultural
residues, and organic waste. It can be used directly as fuel or converted into
biofuels like ethanol and biodiesel.
e. Geothermal
Energy: Geothermal energy is produced by harnessing heat from the Earth's
interior. This heat can be used directly for heating buildings or generating
electricity through geothermal power plants.
f. Tidal
Energy: Tidal energy is generated by harnessing the kinetic energy of tidal
currents. Tidal turbines are placed underwater to capture the energy from the
ebb and flow of tides.
Non-Renewable
Energy Resources:
Non-renewable
energy resources are finite and will eventually be depleted. They are primarily
fossil fuels formed from organic materials over millions of years.
a. Coal: Coal
is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock formed from
fossilized plant matter. It is burned to generate electricity and is also used
in industrial processes such as steel production.
b. Petroleum
(Oil): Petroleum is a liquid fossil fuel composed of hydrocarbons. It is
refined into various fuels such as gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, as well as
used in the production of plastics and chemicals.
c. Natural Gas:
Natural gas is a fossil fuel primarily composed of methane. It is used for heating,
cooking, and electricity generation, as well as in industrial processes and
transportation.
d. Nuclear
Energy: Nuclear energy is generated from the splitting (fission) or fusion of
atomic nuclei. Fission reactions are used in nuclear power plants to generate
heat, which is then converted into electricity through steam turbines.
Each of these energy resources has its advantages and disadvantages in terms of availability, environmental impact, reliability, and cost. The shift towards renewable energy sources is driven by concerns about climate change, energy security, and sustainability.
