1. Define Computer network. Discuss components of a computer network and important WAN technologies.

A computer network is a collection of interconnected devices, such as computers, servers, printers, routers, switches, etc., that are able to communicate and share resources with each other. These networks can be small, such as a home or office network, or large, such as those spanning across cities, countries, or even continents. The primary purpose of a computer network is to facilitate communication and resource sharing among connected devices.

Nodes: These are the devices connected to the network, including computers, servers, printers, and other peripherals.

Important WAN (Wide Area Network) Technologies:

Leased Lines: Leased lines provide dedicated point-to-point connections between two locations. They offer high reliability and consistent bandwidth but can be expensive.

MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching): MPLS is a protocol-agnostic routing technique used in wide area networks. It provides efficient packet forwarding based on labels, improving network performance and scalability.

Frame Relay: Frame Relay is a packet-switched WAN technology that operates at the data link layer of the OSI model. It allows multiple virtual circuits to be established over a single physical connection.

ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode): ATM is a high-speed networking technology that uses fixed-length cells to transmit data. It supports both voice and data communication and is often used by ISPs for backbone connections.

Metro Ethernet: Metro Ethernet is an Ethernet-based WAN technology that extends Ethernet services beyond the local area network. It offers high bandwidth, scalability, and flexibility for connecting multiple locations within a metropolitan area.
