Q1. Highlight the main
characteristics of the British system of education in India. Critically
evaluate how the system impacted the teaching-learning process even after the
end of the British rule.
The British
system of education in India had several distinct characteristics, which
profoundly shaped the teaching-learning process during and after British rule:
Centralization
and Uniformity: The British introduced a centralized education system aimed at
standardizing curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment across the country. This
system was primarily designed to serve the interests of the colonial
administration and create a class of educated elites to assist in governance.
English as the
Medium of Instruction: The British promoted English as the primary medium of
instruction in schools and colleges. This policy aimed to produce a class of
Indians who could effectively communicate with the British administration and
facilitate the spread of British culture and ideas.
Emphasis on
Western Education and Curriculum: The British education system in India focused
heavily on Western subjects, such as literature, science, mathematics, and
history, often neglecting indigenous knowledge systems. This approach reinforced
the superiority of Western culture and values over Indian traditions.
Hierarchy and
Discrimination: The British education system perpetuated social hierarchies and
