Q1. Define the terms
environment and ecosystem? Describe the concept of biosphere.
The environment
refers to the surroundings or conditions in which an organism, species, or
community lives or operates. It encompasses both the physical surroundings
(such as air, water, soil, and climate) and the biotic factors (such as other
organisms and their interactions) that influence the life and development of
organisms. The environment can vary greatly in scale, from the immediate
surroundings of an organism (microenvironment) to the entire planet (global
environment).
Ecosystem:
An ecosystem is a community of organisms (including plants, animals, and microorganisms) living together in a particular environment and the physical components of that environment, with which they interact. This includes not only the living organisms within the ecosystem but also their interactions with the non-living components, such as air, water, soil, sunlight, and nutrients. Ecosystems can vary greatly in size and complexity, ranging from a small pond to a vast forest or even the entire planet.
Biosphere:
The
biosphere is the part of the Earth (or another planet) where life exists. It
includes all living organisms (biota) and their interactions with the other
components of the Earth system, such as the atmosphere, hydrosphere (water
bodies), lithosphere (solid Earth), and sometimes even the cryosphere (frozen
water). The biosphere encompasses all ecosystems on Earth, from the deepest
oceans to the highest mountains, and extends into the atmosphere where airborne
organisms exist. It is essentially the sum total of all living organisms and
their habitats on Earth. The biosphere is unique in its ability to support and
sustain life.
