Communal Harmony
Communal harmony refers to the peaceful coexistence and
cooperation between different religious and ethnic communities within a
society. It implies that people of different communities live together with
mutual respect and understanding, without any discrimination, prejudice or
conflict.
Communal harmony is essential for the social, economic and
political development of a society. It creates a sense of security and trust
among the people, and helps to promote social cohesion, tolerance, and respect
for diversity. It also helps to prevent social unrest, communal violence, and
terrorism.
To promote communal harmony, it is necessary to address the
root causes of communal tensions and conflicts, such as poverty, unemployment,
illiteracy, religious fundamentalism, and political manipulation. It requires
the active participation of all sections of society, including the government,
civil society organizations, religious leaders, and the media.
However, societal unrest undermines faith harmony and peace, which sparks riots. When these riots turn violent, numerous members of different religious groups are killed and hurt. Many people are forced to leave their houses as a result of these riots. Several instances of racial strife include the Delhi riots of 2020, the Muzaffarnagar riots of 2013, the Gujarat riots of 2002, and the Bombay riots of 1993.
These riots
serve as a reminder of how crucial communal unity is in a nation like India. We
must honour the beliefs and practises of others. The constitution establishes
rules and guarantees citizens' rights. During these riots, the government
imposes stringent regulations. Community harmony is important, and everyone
should be made conscious of this. We are protected by the freedom of religion,
but we also need to cultivate tolerance and respect for other religions. Every
year on August 20, "Communal Harmony Day," also known as Sadhbhavana
Diwas, commemorates this concept.

The Mahatma Gandhi in communal Harmony it is promoted intergroup unity and urged all Indians, regardless of their religious affiliation, to band together to fight the colonial authorities. He never discovered any significant distinctions between Hindus, Muslims, and other marginalised groups like Christians, Sikhs, or Parsis. Gandhiji believed that there is an unbreakable harmony in all of creation, which is affirmed in all religions. It was this belief that inspired him to treat all beliefs equally. He emphasised the importance of world harmony, brotherhood, and respect for all forms of life. The realisation of this fundamental unity, according to Mahatma Gandhi, is the ultimate objective of all religions.
