Write short notes in about 200 words
1. (i) Mimesis
Mimesis, basic theoretical principle within the creation of
art. The word is Greek and means “imitation” (though within the sense of
“re-presentation” instead of of “copying”). Plato and Aristotle spoke of
mimesis because the re-presentation of nature. consistent with Plato, all art
may be a sort of imitation: that which really exists (in the “world of ideas”)
may be a type created by God; the concrete things man perceives in his
existence are shadowy representations of this ideal type. Therefore Mimesis,
the painter, the tragedian, and therefore the musician are imitators of an
imitation, twice faraway from the reality . Aristotle, speaking of tragedy,
stressed the purpose that it had been an “imitation of an action”—that of a
person falling from a better to a lower estate. Shakespeare, in Hamlet’s speech
to the actors, mentioned the aim of playing as being “…to hold, as ’twere, the
mirror up to nature.” Thus, an artist, by skillfully selecting and presenting
his material, may purposefully seek to “imitate” the action of life.

Fescennine Verse
Reference to the Context in about 200 words each: 2 X 5 = 10

1. Who do you think is the real hero of the
Iliad?
2. Would you agree that ‘Oedipus Rex is the
story of a noble man in pursuit of the truth that ultimately destroys him’?
3. In what way does Pot of Gold provide a view
of ancient Roman society? Discuss.
4. Discuss the myth of Bacchus. Why do you
think there was a clash in worshipping him?

the final assessment. To be eligible to appear in the Term-End Examination, it
is compulsory for you to submit the assignments as per the schedule. Before
attempting the assignments, you should carefully read the instructions given in
the Programme Guide. These assignments are valid for two admission cycles

c) does not exceed the number of words indicated in
your questions
d) is written neatly and clearly.
