Note : Attempt any five questions. All questions carry equal marks. Answer each question in 500 words approximately.

1. Write a note on the origin and development of Caribbean Literature.

2. Discuss the title of the novel A Grain of Wheat with special reference to Ngugi wa Thiong'o's use of Christian mythology.

3. Comment on the two time frames and the play-within-the-play in Wole Soyinka's A Dance of the Forests.  

4. Discuss Bapsi Sidhwa's use of the English language in the novel Ice-Candy Man. How does she mould it to suit the context ?

5. Attempt an analysis of Naipaul's A House for Mr. Biswas as a diasporic novel.

6. Write a note on the oral rhythms employed by Kamau Brathwaite in his poem "Wings of a Dove".

7. How does the mandala motif work in different ways at the level of theme and structure in the novel The Solid Mandala ?

8. Is the self-alienation of Hagar Shipley in Margaret Laurence's The Stone Angel a consequence of her pride or her religious background ? Give reasons in support of your answer.
